Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at steven@themvpopen.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

1. General Safety Guidelines

  • A dedicated Safety Officer will oversee compliance with all safety measures.
  • Only authorized personnel are allowed in the competition area during active play.
  • An EMT and ambulance will be on-site for medical emergencies.

2. Robot Design & Operation Safety

  • Robots must have an emergency stop function, both manual and remote.
  • The maximum disc launch speed is 200 km/h (124 mph). Any robot exceeding this limit will not be allowed to compete.
  • Robots must be designed with no exposed sharp edges or uncontrolled moving parts.

3. Competition Area Safety

  • A designated throwing zone will be marked, with safety barriers where necessary.
  • A buffer zone will be maintained between the throwing area and spectators.

4. Emergency Procedures

  • All teams must provide a documented emergency shutdown procedure for their robot.
  • In case of a malfunction, all robots will undergo safety re-evaluation before resuming play.

5. Pre-Event Safety Inspection

  • Each robot must pass a full safety inspection before competing, covering emergency stops, launch speed compliance, and mechanical integrity.
  • The mechanical integrity test will require robots to throw three shot types five times each, with a variance of less than 10% between throws.
  • Failure to meet safety requirements will result in disqualification until necessary adjustments are made.

The event is open to anyone and everyone. From high school and college robotic teams, to professional engineers. After this first year, depending on the results, we may develop divisions, but for starters, come one, come all.

Yes. Come watch the best disc throwing robots compete at multiple events at the storied Maple Hill course.
